British Citizenship Application
A British citizenship application gives you the legal right to be recognised as British. Being British can give you and your family a sense of security of living in the UK. If applying as a spouse of a British national and provided that you have completed at least 3 years of residence in the UK satisfying certain criteria, you can apply for British citizenship once you have been granted indefinite leave to remain. If you are not married to a British national, you must wait at least 12 months since you were granted indefinite leave to remain and must have resided in the UK for at least 5 years.

Who can apply for a British Citizenship Application?
To apply for British citizenship, you generally must meet the following requirements:
- You must be aged over 18.
- You must have indefinite leave to remain, indefinite leave to enter, or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme which you must have held for at least 12 months unless you are married to a British national then you do not need to hold it for 12 months.
- Demonstrate a satisfactory level of English language unless an exception applies.
- Passed the Life in the UK test unless an exception applies.
- Be resident in the UK for at least 5 years or 3 years if married to a British national.
- You cannot be absent for more than 450 days from the UK in the 5-year period prior to you applying and your absences in the last 12 months prior to your application cannot be more than 90 days. If you are married to a British national, you cannot be absent for more than 270 days from the UK in the 3-year period prior to you applying and your absences in the last 12 months prior to your application cannot be more than 90 days.
- Intend to make the UK your principal home.
- Be a person of good character.
