The Hong Kong British National (Overseas) Visa

A Hong Kong British National (Overseas) visa application allows British National Overseas (BNO) applicants including their family members from Hong Kong to live, study and work in the UK. If you apply from outside the UK, you must demonstrate that your permanent home is in Hong Kong whereas if you apply from inside the UK, you must demonstrate that your permanent home is in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Hong Kong. You will initially be granted a visa for a period of either 2 ½ years or 5 years. After you have completed a period of 5 years residence, you will be eligible to apply for indefinite leave to remain subject to satisfying certain criteria.

Who can apply for a The Hong Kong British National (Overseas) Visa?

To apply for a Hong Kong British National (Overseas) visa, you generally must meet the following requirements:

  • Be from Hong Kong and hold British National (Overseas) status.
  • If you apply from outside the UK, you must demonstrate that your permanent home is in Hong Kong whereas if you apply from inside the UK, you must demonstrate that your permanent home is in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Hong Kong.
  • Demonstrate that you have adequate maintenance and accommodation in the UK.
  • If you are a family member, this includes a spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner (where you been in a relationship similar to marriage or civil partnership for a period of at least two years), children under the age of 18 and adult dependant relatives.
